Do You Have God’s Number?

By Donna Winchell

Recently, Margie shared with our bible study group a cute story about answering the phone politely and her expectations of the caller’s response.

How we communicate with each other when a call comes in or when we place a call is so important. Our calls don’t stop with just acquaintances, friends and family but also with the most important person we know – God.

We all have choices when God calls us. We can either decline that call or quickly and politely respond  “Here I am Lord”. If we are willing and humbled to listen, we will hear directly from Him. Answering this call will fill a need to hear God clearly and walk in obedience to Him.

However, sometimes we want or need to initiate the call to God – maybe to just say hello or often times to seek advice and help. Communicating with God is essential to strengthening our relationship with Him.

What is God’s Number to Call? Fortunately, God established prayer as a way for us to talk to Him—it is right at our fingertips when we open the bible. Know that God will not decline our calls but will be ready and waiting to answer. Be confident, have trust in the Lord –  He is always happy to receive our calls day or night and hears us when we speak directly to Him. Jeremiah 17:7

Maybe you have been feeling sad or brokenhearted. Don’t wait, try calling God’s number at Psalm 34:17-18 (NIV)

“The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

When we reach out, God’s focus is on the content of our conversation more so than the delivery, so feel free to open your hearts in prayer. God faithfully holds true to His promise to be close and to love us unfailingly.

Are you seeking wisdom in your life? God is just a call away.

“The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance”  Proverbs 1:1-5 (ESV)

Or maybe you are seeking peace – try quickly dialing Matthew 11: 25-30 (NIV)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Do you have a list of Bible “numbers” readily available to contact God when you are sad, need assurance or just need to talk?

Keeping a list of scripture passages handy may not be as reliable or fast as memorizing scripture, but how great to quickly locate just the right number to connect with our LORD. Maybe you already have your own favorite list of scripture passages for communicating with God or maybe you want to compile some type of “Bible Emergency Number” reference sheet and keep it close at hand.

One thing is for sure – in an emergency, you can always dial  God-911” and tell Him exactly what is on your heart and mind at that very moment. God is ready to help us. He may appear far away but that couldn’t be further from the case. He can hear us clearly when we call out to Him.
